kagafjordur municipality has been chosen as Icelandic Destination of Excellence for the project Skagafjordur Local Food (often referred to as Skagafjordur Food Chest) according to Kjarninn, an Icelandic newspaper. Destinations of excellence are chosen in Europe in a European project EDEN, acronym for European Destinations of Excellence, a project promoting sustainable tourism development models across the European Union.
The EDEN-project is based on national competitions that take place every other year. The Icelandic Tourist Board represents Iceland in the EDEN-project which objective is to draw attention to the values, diversity and common features of European tourist destinations and enhance the visibility of emerging destinations. This quest for excellence in tourism is developed around a theme and in year 2015 the theme is food-related tourism.
A committee appointed by The Icelandic Tourist Board chose Skagafjordur municipality for their project Skagafjordur Local food as the Icelandic destination of excellence in 2015. In the conclusion it says that Skagafjordur Local Food has a long history and is the first collaboration of its kind in the field of tourism in Iceland. “The committee considers the project successful and worthy of the nomination and hopes the nomination will further strengthen local food tourism in Skagafjordur as well as in the whole country.”
One of Matís’ branches is located in Skagafjörður
The Biotechnology Centre of Matís is located in Sauðárkrókur, in North-West Iceland. Matís‘s operations in the Biotechnology centre are based on two aims. On one hand is the Biotechnology Centre houses a state-of-the-art research laboratory and on the other hand there a pilot plant in its process area, where the start-up company Iceprotein was successfully established. The Centre provides interested parties with specialized laboratory facilities, a certified production facility with a pilot-plant and staff with specialized knowledge.
